Our Curriculum
Curriculum Intent
At Cringleford CE VA Primary our curriculum is built around our school vision statement and the Church of England’s vision for Education. We offer opportunities for all our children to develop fully to help them reach their potential. We treat every child fairly as a unique individual and encourage them to develop a love of learning through a creative and broad curriculum which encourages them to ask questions and embrace challenge.
Each year group has a set of core objectives for each subject in the curriculum. These objectives progress as the child grows and the expectations develop through the school until each child leaves us with the knowledge and skills they will need in high school and the world beyond.
Our curriculum also:
- Has wow moments to help inspire and enthuse children – trips, visitors, events.
- Is linked, where appropriate, in a cross-curricular way to allow children to really engage in their learning.
- Offers learning opportunities to children that they would not normally experience in their day to day lives.
- Encourages children to be creative, collaborative, curious, resilient, resourceful and reflective in their learning
- Promotes children’s development in order to build character and prepare them to succeed as responsible citizens in a diverse and changing world.

Reading and Phonics
The intent of our reading curriculum
At Cringleford Primary School we believe that all children can become fluent readers and writers.
We want children to love books. We passionately believe that children should be reading widely, often, for pleasure and for information.
We acknowledge, in accordance with National Curriculum (2014) that developing the use of a range of strategies helps to develop successful readers. We teach word level strategies involving phonics (sounds and spelling) alongside contextualisation skills and context, graphic and grammatical knowledge and comprehension.
We work hard to give children access to a wide, rich and diverse range of literature including narrative fiction, poetry, non-fiction, comics, journalism and essays.
Teachers read to their children every single day and children are given opportunities to develop their love of reading through initiatives such as reading week, reading challenges, author visits and reading buddies.
We are determined that every child learns to read fluently and confidently by the time they leave primary school. We monitor children’s progress in reading carefully to make sure that no child is left behind and further, targeted support is put in place where required.
Because we believe teaching every child to read is so important, we have an English Subject Leader who has responsibility for how reading is taught across the school and an Early Reading Leader who drives the early reading programme in our school. These leaders are highly skilled at teaching phonics and reading and support the rest of the school in delivering a high quality reading provision for all children.
We teach early reading (phonics) through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, which is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme. We start teaching phonics in Reception and follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised progression, which ensures children build on their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through school. All teachers teach with fidelity to the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme.

Phonics and Reading Videos
Reception Phonics and Early Reading Video
This video introduces the phonics curriculum that we use at Cringleford and explains the teaching process from introducing the first phonemes (sounds) end graphemes (the written form) through to blending (putting sounds together to read words) and segmenting (hearing the sounds a word has been made up from to spell). The process of how we teach children to read is included along with ideas for parents to try with their children.
Year 1 Phonics and Early Reading Video
This video details how the Year 1 curriculum builds on the learning in Reception. Looking at the different spelling patterns, digraphs (2 letters that make 1 sound), trigraphs (3 letters that make 1 sound) and alternate pronunciation of sounds. There is information about the Phonics Screening Check which all Year 1 children take during the summer term. The video explains how reading sessions are carried out each week, detailing the focus of each reading session.
Year 2 Phonics, Spelling and Early Reading Video
This video continues to explain the children’s phonics learning through the spelling curriculum that is taught in Year 2. There is information about whole class reading sessions which are introduced in Year 2. There is a shift in Year 2 reading sessions where teachers will spend both whole class reading sessions and small group reading sessions developing the children’s comprehension skills so that they can answer questions in a written form, this is explained in more detail in the videomore information, including detail about our implementation of reading and how we measure the impact of our teaching, please see our English policy.
